Welcome to Windfall

There is more cheap, clean renewable energy than ever before. Yet bills are increasing.

As an inividual, it is possible to do something about this, but most current ‘green tech’ for homes is aimed at people in big houses who have £10-20k to invest in a complicated system that needs professional installation. That leaves millions of people disenfranchised and disempowered.

We want to change that and that’s why we founded Windfall Energy.

Renewable energy for all

Urban dwellers who want to use renewable energy products have constraints that are different to their suburban, or rural counterparts. They are more likely to rent, don’t have access to roof-space, and are more mobile, moving house more often. They also use less energy as their homes are more compact.

To create solutions that work for these people, we’re initially developing two products:

  • A plug which controls when your existing, battery-powered devices charge - charging at those time when renewables are most abundant. It also allows you to run appliances at night, such as dehumidifiers or heated clothes dryers.

  • A home battery, designed specially for flats. It charges at night and powers your home in the day. It integrates to your energy supplier to save you money on your bills, paying for itself quickly.

Who we are

Ashley and I met last year at a London IoT meetup focussed on clean energy. Ashley was speaking at the event and we were chatting afterwards about how many of the clean energy solutions exclude people who live in live in flats and smaller homes, and renters. People like us.

So we started seeing what was out there and thinking about what we could do. And here we are.

What’s next

We already have working prototypes and have started shipping a beta version of the plug, along with the app, to trial customers.

We’re using feedback from these tests to guide our development of the plug, the battery, and the app. Our focus is on building beautiful products and making the system as user-friendly as possible.
